Growing Better Fish for Africa
The project makes a substantial contribution to aquaculture research in Nigeria by generating high-quality scientific evidence on the performance of different genetic strains of Nile tilapia and African catfish. Through systematic, multi-location field evaluations, it will assess key performance traits such as growth rate, feed efficiency, and adaptability to local environmental conditions. This research will fill critical knowledge gaps on strain suitability, providing a reliable foundation for producers, researchers, and policymakers to make informed decisions. By establishing a rigorous framework for performance benchmarking, the project not only identifies the most promising strains for immediate adoption but also builds the groundwork for future genetic improvement initiatives. Ultimately, it strengthens the research ecosystem in Nigerian aquaculture and sets a precedent for evidence-based practices across Sub-Saharan Africa.
