Our Approach to Change

Scaling Sustainable Aquaculture
in Africa

The tilapia and catfish strain comparison project seeks to evaluate local and imported fish strains under Nigerian farming conditions. The project focuses on improving aquaculture productivity, increasing access to nutritious protein sources, and empowering women small-scale producers (SSPs).

Key Objectives

• Characterize local and imported Nile tilapia and African catfish strains.
• Conduct genetic analyses to ensure diversity and minimize inbreeding risks
• Perform grow-out trials under typical Nigerian farming conditions.
• Identify biologically economically and socially compatible fish strains (tilapia and catfish)
• Bridge skill gaps through targeted training, particularly for women,
• Provide data for informed policymaking and sustainable aquaculture practices.
