Growing Better Fish for Africa
The Research and Innovation component of the project focuses on identifying superior-performing genetic strains of Nile tilapia and African catfish that are best suited to Nigeria’s aquaculture systems. Adopting an evidence-based approach through rigorous on-farm and experimental trials across diverse farming environments, the project applies advanced genetic and performance assessment methods to identify strains with superior growth, feed efficiency, and resilience. While not directly implementing a genetic improvement program, the findings will inform national aquaculture policies and support the design of future breeding initiatives. By generating and sharing robust scientific evidence, the project aims to guide investment, strengthen innovation, and enhance the sustainability of aquaculture in Nigeria.
